Humorous Stories

Bonnie the Beagle vanishes—then comes home with a prize ribbon from a dog show

Using humorous stories is a great way to enhance your social media, presentations and company communications. This insane beagle tale is a good example.

Every pet owner’s nightmare is a missing dog. But for one British family, their worst fear turned into a tale so bizarre and heartwarming, you’d swear it was written by a screenwriter with a soft spot for dogs and underdog victories.

One Dog, One Open Gate, and One Wild Turn of Events

Peter and Paula Closier of West Sussex, England, were thrown into panic one Sunday morning when they discovered their five-year-old beagle-mix, Bonnie, had vanished. Their gate had swung open, and Bonnie was nowhere to be found. The couple immediately called the police, alerted the local dog warden, and enlisted the help of neighbors in the search. It was full panic mode.

Meanwhile, On the Road to Surrey…

Unbeknownst to the Closiers, a man named John Wilmer was driving to a local dog show in Surrey with his two dogs when he spotted a lone pup by the side of the road. It was Bonnie. With no time to find her owners and not wanting to leave her in danger, he scooped her up and continued on to the show.

Here’s where things take a turn for the wonderfully weird.

“Does Anyone Know This Dog?”

Wilmer posted a message on Facebook asking if anyone recognized the dog. While waiting for responses, he figured, “Well, she’s here… might as well enter her.”

So he entered Bonnie into the “Best Rescue Dog” category at the show. Not only did she charm the crowd—she won third place.

Let that sink in: a missing dog entered a show she wasn’t supposed to be at… and placed.

A Triumphant Return

Later that day, Bonnie was safely reunited with her family, with a third-place ribbon around her neck like she’d just pulled off a heist-level plot twist.

“We couldn’t believe it,” Peter said. “You couldn’t make it up.”

Bonnie had been rescued by the Closiers from the streets of Crete when she was just one year old. They had never entered her in any competitions—until fate decided otherwise.

The Moral of the Story?

Make sure your gate is locked, always check Facebook… and never underestimate a rescue dog with a flair for the dramatic.
