The number one reason for suicide is depression. A depressed person isn’t just “sad.” According to Psychology Today, their brain gives them distorted thoughts they can’t shake. It’s a disease. But it is very treatable. It takes some effort to find the right balance of medication, counseling, healthy habits, fitness and sleep among other factors, but the results are often dramatic.
What can you do? If you think someone might be depressed, ask them about it. They usually give an honest answer. Let them know there is a ton of help available and many people have treated it successfully. This may be uncomfortable for you at first, but it is better than wondering “what’s wrong.”
